Blocked ears can make everyday life frustrating: muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, ringing or even mild dizziness. Our microsuction service at Attleborough Pharmacy removes ear wax safely and comfortably, without water and without needing a GP referral.
What is microsuction?
Microsuction uses a small, gentle suction device with a fine tip, guided by a clear view of your ear canal, to lift wax out. Unlike ear syringing, it uses no water, so there is no risk of water being left in the ear. It is widely regarded as a safe, effective method.
What to expect
- A short check of your ears and your history
- Wax removed from one or both ears, usually in around 15 to 20 minutes
- A little noise from the suction, which most people find fine
- Advice on ear care afterwards
Before your appointment
It can help to use olive oil or a wax-softening drop for a few days beforehand if your pharmacist advises it. Tell us if you have a perforated eardrum, have had ear surgery, or have ear pain or discharge, as microsuction may not be suitable.
Prices
If no wax is found we charge a consultation fee. Book ear microsuction or see our ear infection and ear pain service if you are in pain.
Signs you may have a build-up of ear wax
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- A feeling of blockage or fullness
- Tinnitus, ringing or buzzing
- Earache or itching
- Dizziness or hearing aids whistling
What not to do
Avoid cotton buds, hairgrips and ear candles. They can push wax deeper, damage the ear canal or cause injury. Using softening drops for a few days beforehand is a safer way to prepare.
Is microsuction better than ear syringing?
Microsuction is performed under direct vision and uses no water, which reduces the risk of water remaining in the canal or irritation. Many clinicians now prefer it, particularly for people with narrow canals, previous ear problems or those who cannot have syringing.
After your appointment
You may feel immediate relief and hearing may be clearer straight away. Mild tenderness or a little tinnitus can follow for a short time. Keep your ears dry for the rest of the day and let us know if you have pain, discharge or dizziness that continues.
